Muslim and Christian women discuss wisdom for peacebuilding from their traditions

University of the Incarnate Word Library Special Collections Room, March 1, Wednesday, 7 pm Panel discussion (Preceded by the film Pray the Devil Back to Hell at 6 pm)

Pope Francis in his message for the World Day of Peace gave examples such as the Muslim Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan. “Women in particular are often leaders of nonviolence, as for example, was Leymah Gbowee and the thousands of Liberian women,” Francis states. She gathered Muslim and Christian women who organized “nonviolent protest that resulted in high level peace talks to end the second civil war in Liberia.”

Come join local women in a discussion of peacebuilding. Muslims: Dr. Fatma Arslan, Narjis Pierre, Sumeyra Tek, and others. Christians: Rev. Rachel Epp Miller, Mennonite; Rev. Ann Helmke, Lutheran; Sister Martha Ann Kirk, Catholic.

For those who would like to come at 6 pm, the award-winning film about the Nobel Laureate Laymah Gbowee, Pray the Devil Back to Hell will be shown. This documentary shows the social unrest in the West African Republic of Liberia, where civil war tore the nation apart and left hundreds of thousands dead or displaced. The film reconstructs the way this tragedy galvanized a coalition of Christian and Muslim women to rise up and, through nonviolent tactics, put pressure on their government to pursue peace talks. Director Gini Reticker follows their grassroots moment as it leads to democratic elections and Liberia’s first female president.
