Sanana M. M. Lewanika is the chairperson for an extremely productive organization, Masupanzila Women Empowerment Association, which assists and strengthens women, to raise their standard of living. In 2003, Women’s Global Connection identified three women in Mongu district, Zambia under their cross-cultural leadership program; among these three women, Sanana M. Lewanika was included. In 2004, Women’s Global Connection invited three women to an international conference in San Antonio, Texas. After the conference, the three women were inspired to reach out to women in Mongu; therefore, they founded Masupa Nzila, which means “path finder”, Women Empowerment Association.
Sanana Lewanika is also married with four daughters and a grandchild; as well as taking care of her family she also looks after five orphans, her mother, and her grandmother. Aside from being a chairperson for Masupa Nzila, Sanana also works for Caritas Mongu in the Diocese of Mongu in the Western Part of Zambia as a Diocesan Justice and Peace Coordinator. Sanana is also a peasant farmer, who alongside her husband, grows rice, maize, and cassava during her spare time, to be able to educate and provide for her children. As if the farming wasn’t a challenge in itself, Sanana has to battle draughts, floods, and the lack of farming equipment. Sanana’s passion for farming is what pulls her through and she looks forward to the day when she can own her own oxen, harrow, a plough, and camping tent, which will all help cultivate her crops on time.
